Backyard pool safety: new laws come into effect on April 29.

To assist pool owners in meeting the requirements of the State Government’s amended swimming pool legislation, Campbelltown Council staff will visit a number of local shopping centres during January to share information about the legislation and help pool owners ensure that they are aware of their responsibilities.

Under the legislation, from April 29 this year, property owners will be required to provide a valid swimming pool compliance certificate as part of the contract documentation before selling or leasing a property with a pool.

Pool owners can find out more about the legislation and their obligations, or get advice on how to keep their pool safe, by visiting council staff at one of the following locations:

14 January – Glenquarie Town Centre, 9am to 1pm

15 January – Rosemeadow Marketplace, 9am to 1pm

16 January – Campbelltown Mall, 9am to 3pm

20 January – Eagle Vale Marketplace, 9am to 1pm

21 January – Macarthur Square, 9am to 5pm

22 January – Minto Marketplace, 9am to 1pm

The Royal Life Saving Society research reveals the majority of drowning deaths in young children are related to problems with child safety barriers.

Over the past decade in NSW alone, 60 children have drowned in backyard swimming pools and 70 children have neurological damage as a result of immersion, and educating pool owners on how to prevent these tragedies is a priority.

  1. It’s worth noting that state government legislation does not force councils to inspect pools in owner occupied premises.

Whilst I called for Council to allow residents of owner occupied pools to choose whether they wanted to pay for a certificate, council by an overwhelming majority instead chose to force another cost on ratepayers by making them pay for a service they may not even want.
