Campbelltown Camden District Cricket Club has rolled out the welcome mat for their latest big name recruit, English international Monty Panesar.
The experienced spinner will spend the 2016-17 summer playing and coaching at the Ghosts.
Panesar arrived at the club’s headquarters, Raby Sports Complex, on Tuesday and was immediately impressed by the wonderful cricket set up that will be his cricket home for the next few months.
The Englishman, who made his Test debut for England in 2006 against India, will bring an added spice to the Ghosts first grade attack.
He has been immediately selected for this weekend’s fixture against Sutherland at Glen McGrath Oval.
Panesar brings with him a tremendous first class record that spans 217 games including 50 Tests matches for England.
He has taken 167 Test match wickets, and when combined with his international ODI record, Panesar has claimed just under 200 scalps.
The spinner says he is determined to regain his England Test cap and sees his venture to the Ghosts as an integral part of that process.
Panesar started training immediately and will take part in his first club practice tonight.
“Already Monty has been overwhelmed by the support he has received from two of our sponsors,’’ a Ghosts club spokesman said.
“Especially Andrew Hresczcuk from Lifestyle and Sports Physiotherapy and David and Paula Patrick from Roosters Traffic Control.
“Monty has discussed his intentions to fully engage with all sponsors and members in club.
“Apart from assuming his playing role immediately, Monty will be on the coaching staff for the first Poidevin Gray Shield (Under 21) match on Sunday and will start work with the Ghosts Green Shield Under 16 side.
“Monty will also be available for private coaching sessions and be employed at the Ghosts Cricket Academy.
“The Campbelltown Camden District Cricket Club would like to welcome Monty to Macarthur.
“Players and supporters will enjoy his wonderful disposition, his great sense of humour and his cricketing experience and skill of being one of the world’s leading spin bowlers.’’
