Reflect, respect, celebrate: Mayor’s Australia Day tip

Local councils are counting down to Australia Day 2024 next Friday, January 26. Camden Council is calling on residents to dust off their cork hats and get their flags ready, while Wollondilly has revealed who is in line to receive an Australia Day award this year in the shire.

Residents are encouraged to head down to Argyle Street in Camden from 9am on January 26 to see some incredible roving entertainment.

Then, at 10am, they will be able to enjoy the popular Macarthur Lions Australia Day street parade which will conclude at 11am.

Families and schools (top( turned out in force for Australia Day in Camden last year.

Also taking place on Australia Day will be Camden’s first citizenship ceremony for 2024, which will welcome more than 100 residents as they take their pledge to be true-blue Aussies.

The Australia Day awards will also crown Camden’s Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year, and hand out a Sports Achievement Award, Community Group Award and Arts and Cultural Award.

Mayor of Camden, Cr Ashleigh Cagney, said she was excited to see the community come together.

“Australia Day is a time for all Australians to reflect, respect and celebrate,” she said.

“It’s about coming together to reflect and celebrate our nation, its achievements and most of all, its people.

“I encourage everyone to head down to the Camden CBD and mark Australia Day with us.”

Wollondilly Shire Council has released the list of people nominated for 2024 Australia Day awards.

The winners will be announced during Wollondilly’s Australia Day celebrations, which will be held at the Picton Botanic Gardens beginning at 8am on January 26. Nominees are:

Local Hero – community group:  Bargo Men’s Shed, Blankets of Love, Lions Club of Tahmoor, Macarthur Stormchasers, Picton High School community mentoring group and Rotary Club of Picton.

Citizen of the year – Patrick Nellestein.

Citizen of the Year, Local Hero – Tristan Triffitt, William Beattie.

Citizen of the year, Achiever of the year – Lyn Patricia Davey.

Citizen of the year, Achiever of the year, Senior Citizen of the year – Sue Davis.

Citizen of the year, Local Hero, Achiever of the year, Environmental citizen of the year – Michelle Maroun.

Citizen of the year, Senior Citizen of the year, Local Hero – John Bicknell.

Citizen of the year, Achiever of the year, Senior Citizen of the year – Shirley Carlon.

Citizen of the year, Sportsperson of the year – Melinda Haskett.

Disability inclusion award, Citizen of the year – Rosemary MacAllister.
