Mayor sets phenomenal records that may never be broken

The Mayoral Minute on community service awards for this old journo and Mandy Perrin on Tuesday night was the first one for Mayor Paul Hawker.

That’s 11 months in the job and with his first Mayoral Minute Cr Hawker springs a nice surprise for me and Mandy – and probably a few other people around the town.

That’s probably a record, too – the least number of Mayoral Minutes by any mayor.

But that’s not the only record Cr Hawker will take to his retirement.

Being a little unpredictable has been a feature of his term in the big chair, but unpredictable good, not unpredictable crazy like some before him.

As the first Liberal Mayor of Campbelltown in 50 years, he was most un-Liberal like, and I mean that in a good, inclusive sense.

The other notable feature is that he has almost certainly set another record that will never be broken: the number of functions he attended.

Some mayors delegate the bulk of the invitations they get, but Paul Hawker – who is no spring chicken – hardly missed a beat.

The mayor naturally gets so many invitations he or she has to delegate some to other councillors, but his approach has been both phenomenal and very much appreciated by a lot of local community groups.

And a couple of old journos.
