Community Voice of Australia leader Masud Khalil says he’d like to get back on Campbelltown Council to continue the work he started in the previous term.
While he feels that he achieved a lot in the shortened term of two years and eight months, Councillor Khalil says there’s still plenty of challenges.
He finished the term as deputy mayor, but he was also the chair of council’s multicultural committee, an area he feels there’s a lot more work to do.
“I stand with people who have problems in our community, and I don’t have a political agenda,’’ says Cr Khalil, pictured above speaking during the last council meeting in August..
“I am asking people to vote for me because I am genuine in whatever I say, and I am the guy who thinks it’s about the people, not about the council.’’
Cr Masud says Campbelltown has become very multicultural, but he’s not sure the council has kept pace with this demographic change over the past 30 years.
“I found it was a very conservative council with a conservative approach on such issues,’’ he says.
“Civic centres need to be open for everyone because we are diverse in language and religion.
“When I got into the council, I tried a lot to open up the civic centre for others, but there is much more work to do.’’
Cr Khalil is not too bothered with Campbelltown’s single ward system, saying he tried to represent the entire town in his term on council.
“I am a councillor from Glen Alpine to Glenfield,’’ he says.
“I live in Minto but as a councillor I represent all of Campbelltown.
“Which is why I pushed for a pickleball court in Ambarvale and a selective school for Macquarie Fields.
“All of my notices of motion were for all of Campbelltown, not just Minto.
“I work really hard; ask people from any suburb in Campbelltown, they will tell you they know my name because I have been there and talked to them.
“That’s why I am asking the people of Campbelltown to help me get elected for a second term,’’ says Cr Khalil.
Community Voice of Australia is Group C on the ballot paper for Saturday’s election.
