Matilda mania is well and truly alive in outer South Western Sydney, from Liverpool to Camden and Campbelltown, through to Wollondilly Shire.
All four local councils have organised live fan sites for tonight’s historic FIFA World Cup semi final between Australia and England.
Thousands of residents in the four local government areas are expected to turn up to cheer our girls home against the Poms.
In Camden, almost 1000 people have responded to Mayor Ashleigh Cagney’s Facebook post (pictured) announcing Onslow Oval as the venue for the big screen showing of one of the biggest sporting events in Australia since the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
And Campbelltown Mayor George Greiss says, “everyone is invited to celebrate the Matildas historic FIFA Women’s World Cup semi-final against England at a live viewing site at the Campbelltown Athletics Centre’’.
Anyone attending there is asked to bring their picnic blankets and chairs.
Gates to the centre open at 6.30pm, with the match kicking off at 8pm.
“The Matildas’ performances at this World Cup – including Campbelltown’s own Alanna Kennedy – have captured the imagination of Australians everywhere,” Mayor Greiss said.
“So let your family and friends know and come and enjoy the game with fellow fans at Campbelltown Athletics Centre tomorrow night.
Light food and refreshments will be available.
The event is alcohol free across all four fan sites.
Wollondilly Shire Council has joined forces with the Picton Magpies rugby league club to live stream the big match at Victoria Park.
Gates will open at 6pm and fans are asked to bring a picnic rug or chairs.
Food and beverages will be available to buy from Macarthur Grind and George’s on Argyle.
Camden Council’s fan site at Onslow Oval will open gates from 6pm and fans are asked to bring their own picnic rug and chairs.
Food options from the Macarthur Grind and others will be available.
In Liverpool, the live site will be set up at Cirillo Reserve, Middleton Grange from 7pm.
