There was good news today for those Macarthur Heights residents who for years have had to walk almost three kilometres to Macarthur railway station because of the lack of a bus service.
A $150 million NSW budget boost was announced this morning to provide more regular school bus services in the fast-growing outer suburbs of Sydney and some regional locations where transport infrastructure has lagged housing development – that would be Macarthur Heights.
“A new bus route is being created to connect the growing community at Macarthur Heights to Macarthur Station,’’ the government media statement said.
The government said the extra routes will be supported by a $26 million spend on new buses to make sure expanded timetables can be delivered.
Unfortunately, there was no timeline provided so Macarthur Heights residents will need to keep the champagne on ice for a little while longer.
Some of them have actively lobbied for a bus service for more than six years.
But the former government showed little sympathy for people having to walk – or get a taxi – to get to the nearest railway station.
The member for Campbelltown Greg Warren has supported their pleas, and once his party won government in 2023, things slowly started to happen.
A little over a year ago, the NSW bus task force came to Campbelltown to hear about the public transport needs of the area.
The forum was held on March 15, 2024, and now, 15 months later, funding is about to be made available for a bus service at Macarthur Heights.
Today the state government also announced that as part of the Budget funding bus services will be introduced for the first time between Wilton and Campbelltown to support new housing growth.
This will build on Landcom’s recent launch of a shuttle bus service that is now in operation.
Wollondilly Mayor Matt Gould has warmly welcomed the news, following strong advocacy from Council for public transport connections to the Wollondilly Shire.
“This comes on top of recent news of a new high school at Wilton from 2027, and demonstrates that the NSW Government is heeding the call for investment into our growing area,” he said.
