Campbelltown MP Greg Warren has honoured Campbelltown’s fallen soldiers and surviving veterans at the dedication ceremony for the Macarthur Gardens Memorial.
Warren joined dozens of residents and community representatives at the ceremony last week, and took the opportunity to reflect on the 97th anniversary of the Australian infantry’s last battle in the final phase of the Hindenburg Line breakthrough on the same day in 1918.
In his remarks, Mr Warren told the story of Captains John Mahony and John Fletcher – a pair of friends from Melbourne who each lead a company in the 24th Batallion during the last battle.
Warren also reflected on the significance of the Grevillea flower as a symbol of the Anzac spirit.
“The RSL Spirit of Anzac Grevillea is an important symbol, as its lush red flowers remind us of the blood shed by the 61,000 Anzacs who lost their life in the Great War.”
Located between Glen Alpine and Macarthur Square, Macarthur Gardens Retirement Village (the site of the memorial) is home to more than 500 residents, including many veterans and their spouses.
