Really love what we do, and that’s no bull

no bull.
There’s never a dull moment for a journo, and that’s no bull.

[dropcap]M[/dropcap]aybe it’s the stories and functions we’ve covered so far in March, but we’ve heard a lot about steering the young people of Macarthur towards trades and away from university degrees.

When you think about it there’s a persuasive argument behind it, a certain logic in overturning this idea that everyone has to go to university if they want to succeed in the internet age.

Certainly most business transactions are already being conducted online, but at the same time there will always be a need for plumbers, carpenters, brickies and cooks.

These days journalists can’t get a job unless they’ve got the bit of paper from uni, but I can tell you the best ones I met did all their training or cadetship on the job.

And I will tell you something else – nobody became a reporter or a journalist to get rich.

Our main reward is continually meeting new people at all the events and stories we cover.

Some of our critics are being a little harsh when they suggest journos will go to the opening of an envelope if there’s free beer and food on offer.

OK, it could  be a little bit true.

Or maybe you should be the judge after seeing our Top 5 most enjoyable and rewarding functions/stories we covered in March so far. Who knows, you might even think about becoming a journo.

No bull.

Number 1. I can see you’re smirking about the choice for number one, but the “Long Lunch’’ at Camden High School organised by mwlp linking youth and Luke Mangan’s Inspired series was all about encouraging hospitality students to seriously think about a career in … hospitality. OK, the food was great as our pictures show, but all the beverages were non alcoholic.

Number 2: The Lifeline Macarthur 40th anniversary dinner is not included on the list because of the disco theme, but rather for the large number of people who are regularly in the news who were in attendance. Kind of like a captive audience for a journo. We love that.

Number 3. We made three visits to Raby Sports Complex on the weekend for the final between the Ghosts v Sydney, and it was a very enjoyable atmosphere, even though the home team went down. As a bonus, I bumped into a couple of locals I hadn’t seen for years and we chewed the fat, something you can do at the cricket and not miss much action.

Number 4. The very successful apprenticeships and traineeships night at Wests Leagues club Leumeah, organised once again by mwlp linking youth. There were actual jobs, traineeships and apprenticeships, on offer, and it was wonderful to see the excitement in the faces of all those young people and their mums and dads.

Number 5: No bull, the Ginger Kennett interview at Picton, and not just because it was a pretty good story. I spotted a metallic bull near the entrance of the family’s property, and you know me, couldn’t resist having a pic taken with it before I left. Ginger’s mum, Georgie took the pic.
