The Western Sydney Wanderers National Youth League squad for the 2015/16 season is brimming with local products.
As well as being one of the youngest in the competition, the Wanderers NYL side continues the club’s focus on developing young talent from in and around western Sydney.
Ten of the 15 players in the squad named earlier this week hail from Western Sydney – from Cobbitty in the south, up to North Richmond and out to Concord West.
The south west of Sydney has three representatives in the squad: Cobbitty’s Lachlan Roberts, Liverpool’s Mario Shabow and Fairfield’s Tariq Maia.
It helps to make the Wanderers NYL side a team that truly represents all of the western Suburbs of Sydney.
Add the NYL local contingent to that in the Wanderers A-League and W-League teams and it points to a strong commitment to Western Sydney footballers.
The first round of the revamped NYL competition kicks off this weekend when the Wanderers take on Newcastle Jets at Magic Park on Sunday before returning home to take on Central Coast Mariners at Marconi Stadium in Round 2.
The team will again be led by foundation coach Trevor Morgan who takes the reins for his fourth straight season.
“I have high expectations for this squad as a team and as individuals trying to reach the Hyundai A-League and beyond,” Morgan said.
“They are young, have great attitude and a desire to be the best.
“We intend to shape them into future stars and leaders of this club, on and off the pitch.
“Seven of this group have been selected for the Young Socceroos this year which shows their ability and also the club’s focus on youth.”
