The NSW Department of Planning and Environment has been accused of going against the wishes of the community in recommending that a concrete recycling plant be approved at Moorebank next to the Georges River.
“The State Government has demonstrated unprecedented commitment to Sydney’s west and provided money to enhance the Georges River so that people can enjoy it,” was the reaction from Liverpool Mayor Ned Mannoun.
“So it’s difficult to understand why then the Department of Planning would decide to wedge a dirty, dusty concrete recycling plant between a proposed $44 million marina and 2,000 newly built family homes.
“A concrete recycling plant can go anywhere but there is only one place to position a marina in Western Sydney,” he said.
More than 1350 submissions from concerned residents and businesses, including Liverpool Council, were lodged in opposition to the recycling centre – projected to process up to 500,000 tonnes of building waste per year.
Mayor Mannoun, pictured, said that Liverpool Council will take its opposition directly to the NSW Planning and Assessment Commission, now tasked with the decision of approving or rejecting the development.
“I would encourage residents of Georges Fair to join with me and voice their concerns at this public meeting,” he said.
The PAC meeting is open to the public and is scheduled for 3pm, June 1 at Bankstown Golf Club, 70 Ashford Avenue, Milperra.
Residents wishing to make a comment on the Department of Planning and Environment recommendation at the meeting should register their interest with Stephanie Calderaro on (02) 9383 2112 by 1pm, Thursday, May 28.
