Deserved honour: Fellow Wests Group Macarthur director Paul Lake, right, congratulates Roy Warby for becoming the 11th life member.

Tony Norton remembers Roy Warby doing the hard yards on the field for the mighty Campbelltown City Kangaroos rugby league footy team many, many years ago.

The two became mates, and now they share another special bond: they are both life members of Wests Group Macarthur.

“Roy’s always put in and really deserves this honour,’’ says Mr Norton.

Warby, whose family is one of the oldest in Campbelltown, was bestowed with life membership at the group’s annual general meeting las Sunday in the club premises at Leumeah.

He is just the 11th person in the history of the club to receive life membership.

Fellow director and the man who proposed life membership, Paul Lake, said this honour was not handed out simply for the years of service someone had put in.

“It’s about going above and beyond, and Roy Warby has certainly done that in his time as director at Wests,’’ said Mr Lake, a former mayor who still serves on Campbelltown City Council.

“Roy has always been very passionate for the development of the club, and has also always kept a close eye on finance, to make sure the club is always travelling well,’’ he said.

As for the man himself, despite the accolades, Roy Warby accepted the life membership honour with humility and good grace.

“It’s a fantastic honour as has been the experience of helping Wests grow to help the local community,’’ he said.

“I just love it, making a contribution in Campbelltown.

Mr Warby played in active role in the growth of Wests as it brought Wests Tennis Club, Country Club Gledswood Hills and Lakeside Golf Club Camden under the one banner, Wests Group Macarthur.

He has served on the Wests board of directors since March 1995, including stints as chairman and deputy chairman. He also served on the Wests Tigers board.

He is currently a member of Wests Group Macarthur’s property and development committee and the sports management committee.

Mr Warby is also a founding partner of accounting firm Warby, Hawkins and Kumar in Campbelltown, where he has been servicing the area with financial advice since 1978.

Now semi retired, Roy Warby enjoys his time as an active golf member, mostly at Lakeside Golf Club with fellow directors and friends.

One of those friends is Tony Norton.

“Roy is a family man who has worked hard for the community for many years,’’ he says of his long time mate.

“He’s a great Campbelltown fellow who deserves this honour.’’
