The Liberal Party leader George Greiss had a big smile on his face when the first name was read out at the ballot draw for the December 4 Campbelltown Council election.
Returning officer Kate Harris announced that the Liberal Party would be on the premium A position above the line on the ballot paper.
The various candidate groups are placed above the line, from left to right, in alphabetical order.
Considering the donkey vote, whereby around 10 percent of voters, and sometimes even more, place a 1 in the first box they see, this was a huge result for Greiss and the Liberal Party as they seek to dismantle the numerical dominance the Labor Party has enjoyed in the past five years and two months.
But if the current mayor, George Brticevic, who was sitting next to Cr Greiss (pictured above), was disappointed, his spirits would have been lifted when he heard the returning officer draw Labor in spot B.
Campbelltown Independents, led by popular businesswoman Anne Parnham, drew spot C, followed by another group of independents in D, this one led by Muhamad Ibrahim Khalil.
In spot E will be the Animal Justice Party, while F will have Warren Morrison and his Totally Locally Committed party.
Community First Team will be in G, but long time leader Paul Lake won’t be there as he has now retired from council.
He was there today alongside the man who replaces him, Josh Cotter (pictured), and who is expected to perform well.
The Greens, led by councillor Ben Moroney, were drawn last and will occupy spot H.
The election will be held on Saturday, December 4, with four pre-poll places to be activated in Ingleburn, Minto, Campbelltown and Glen Alpine.
Meanwhile in Liverpool, where they will also hold a direct election for mayor, Labor candidate Nathan Hagarty drew top spot at this morning’s ballot, with the Liberal Party in last spot.
