Let’s help Picton get back on its feet

After following Luke Foley around during his visit to Picton last week, three things come to mind.

The first one is a no brainer: insurance companies need to pull out all stops to help those poor people in Picton who lost their business in the floods of two weeks ago.

That’s the biggest message the State Opposition Leader said he got from Pictonites during his visit.

It’s a waiting game now for most of them, he said, repeating what they said to him over and over again.

And no doubt some insurance companies are doing their best but it’s a fair bet some others are taking their time.

The worst ones are probably still trying to work out where Picton is.

So that’s the first thing.

The second is where were all the big media when Foley went from the SES in Campbelltown to the Camden Showground and then over the Razorback Mountain to the devastation at Picton?

TV stations, Sydney metropolitan newspapers all claim they love western Sydney but when the alternative premier of NSW visits a flood affected part of it they go missing in action.

You don’t think they only say they love us so we watch their programs and buy their papers, do you?

Gosh, surely not.

The third point is probably the most important.

And that is if you enjoyed a Sunday drive down to Picton for breakfast at one of their lovely cafes or lunch and a beer at the King George IV hotel, the locals want you to keep doing it.

In fact they need you to drop in more than ever.

So if you live in the greater Macarthur region, from Liverpool to Campbelltown and Camden, from Catherine Field to Bringelly and Cobbitty, let’s help our friends in Picton.

Get in the car with the family and head down to this lovely town on the edge of the Southern Highlands that desperately needs all the help it can get.

It’s the least we can do as neighbours.
