If you had a lot of it, would you leave some of your money to someone other than your family?
It happens a lot in some countries but it’s just starting to take off in Australia.
The latest such donation – a $750,000 bequest from an anonymous donor – will go towards medical research that will help cancer and heart patients at Liverpool Hospital.
The bequest will be split equally between cancer research, heart research and a general donation to the hospital.
In the last financial year, South Western Sydney Local Health District invested $15 million in medical research, so this donation will have quite a substantial impact.
Karen McMenamin, the Liverpool Hospital General Manager, welcomed the bequest and said the money would be well used in the hospital.
“We are honoured to receive such a generous donation from this person’s estate,” she said.
“We are very proud of our commitment to research at Liverpool Hospital and the extra funding will greatly benefit our cancer and cardiology research departments.”
The bequest allocated for a general donation for the hospital will go into a central fund to be used for general improvements.
These could include new equipment, improvements to patient facilities or upgrades to treatment services.
“At Liverpool Hospital we provide safe and quality care to every person who comes through our doors,” Ms McMenamin said.
