Just about everybody knows Fred Borg – he’s almost as famous in Campbelltown as Fred Fisher.
So it will come as no surprise to know that he has just received recognition in this year’s Jubilee Awards.
But what made it really special – for Fred and the awards – was that also receiving the same award today was his son Paul.
However, Fred Borg wasn’t the only local “legend’’ to be receive one – photographer and historian Norm Campbell was another to stand out when 39 locals were honoured in the 2015 awards.
Mayor Paul Lake, who presented the awards, acknowledged Fred Borg’s and Norm Campbell’s contribution to our community over many years.
The mayor said that in 1998 Fred Borg was the Campbelltown City Citizen of the Year and Rotary Citizen of the Year as a result of strong commitment to community service. As chairperson and founder of the 24 Hour Fight Against Cancer Macarthur, Cr Borg has helped to raise $3 million for local cancer services over the past 10 years.
The annual Jubilee awards recognise individuals and groups in Campbelltown who have contributed to the community for 50 years or more, or for 30 years or more for members of the local Indigenous community.
Cr Lake also made special mention of Norman Campbell, who has lived in Campbelltown for 91 years.
Mr Campbell’s pioneering family owned prominent Queen Street heritage building Stanwell House, also known as Legacy House, and he was the last private owner to live there.
He has dedicated much of his life to recording and documenting Campbelltown’s history, and has contributed a range of historical records and photos to Campbelltown City Library and Campbelltown and Airds Historical Society.
Mr Campbell was also a tireless worker for local emergency services and was captain of Campbelltown Fire Brigade from 1960 to 1968.
In 2001 he was awarded Campbelltown City Citizen of the Year in recognition of his contribution to the community.
“These awards are an opportunity to acknowledge long standing residents and organisations who have played a role in helping to shape the city over many years,’’ said the mayor.
“I am honoured to recognise all of our long serving residents and thank them for supporting our community over such a consistent period of time. “They represent a wealth of local knowledge and history, and each has played their own part in fostering the strong community spirit that our city is renowned for.
