A record 47 residents and four community groups were celebrated at Campbelltown City Council’s annual Jubilee Awards presentation this morning.

The awards acknowledged a total of 2,900 years of living, experiencing, growing and working in Campbelltown.

The annual Jubilee Awards recognise individuals and groups in Campbelltown who have contributed to the community for 50 years or more, or for 30 years or more for members of Campbelltown’s Indigenous community.

They included the editor of the Chronicle newspaper, Mandy Perrin, who was born in Campbelltown 50 years ago and has been at the helm of the local paper since April 1993.

Making it a family affair, both her parents, Narelle and Milton Wearing, who are also very active in the community, were recognised by the Jubilee Awards of 2016.

Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr Paul Hawker, hosted a civic reception for the 51 recipients, making special mention of a number of nominees, including Mrs Margaret Smith, who has called Campbelltown City home for 80 years, and Mrs Jean Purser, who boasts a 79 year affiliation with Campbelltown.

Both Margaret and Jean were heavily involved in a number of service clubs over the decades – from The Smith Family to View Club and Ingleburn Lions Club – helping to make a difference to the lives of those less fortunate and lending their hand to many fundraising initiatives for the benefit of fellow residents.

Four local organisations, Campbelltown and Districts Lapidary Club, Campbelltown Quota Club, Campbelltown State Emergency Service and Ingleburn RSL Sub Branch Women’s Auxiliary, also received awards this morning.

Cr Hawker said the Jubilee Awards were an opportunity to acknowledge long-standing residents and organisations who have helped make Campbelltown unique.

“This remarkable number of recipients is testimony to the allure of our city – from a small country town half a century ago to the growing city centres that we have today, and still such a great place to live, work and play that many of those who chose to base themselves here in those early years have remained here,” Cr Hawker said.

“I thank all of today’s recipients for their contributions to our community, and for helping to shape Campbelltown City into a place that many more will be proud to call home or choose as a base for their business or community group into the future,” Cr Hawker added.
