Five local Indigenous high school students are taking the first steps in their future careers as part of the team building the $632 million stage two Campbelltown Hospital redevelopment.

The Year 10 students from five Campbelltown high schools are receiving world class training through the Diz Footprints empowerment program, established to support the education and enrichment of young Indigenous people.

South Western Sydney Local Health District chief executive Amanda Larkin congratulated the students.

“This is the first time our health district has had the opportunity to support a program such as Diz Footprints and I am so proud that it is through the redevelopment of Campbelltown Hospital and principal builders CPB Contractors,’’ Ms Larkin said.

“The five young people should be proud of the contribution they are making and their role in representing their community through such a significant project.’’

Campbelltown Hospital general manager Alison Derrett said the hospital redevelopment project was honoured to support the Diz Footprints program.

“The work that this program is doing to help uplift the lives of our Aboriginal youth locally is to be applauded,” Ms Derrett said.

On completion of their traineeships, the students will have secured a certificate two in construction and a wealth of valuable practical experience.

Diz Footprints project director Doug Delaney thanked Tharawal Aboriginal Corporation, the NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group and CPB Contractors for supporting the program.

“Our ultimate aim is to improve the education and employment pathways for Aboriginal youth,” Mr Delaney said.

The NSW Government is investing $632 million in the stage two redevelopment of Campbelltown Hospital, which will include an expanded emergency department, a new intensive care unit, upgraded maternity and paediatric services and enhanced diagnostic services.
