Campbelltown councillor Seta Berbari says providing local sporting facilities for people with disabilities is not just about sport.
“This is about dignity and belonging for everyone in Campbelltown,’’ she told the June council meeting.
Cr Berbari received strong support in the chamber for her notice of motion when it was put to the vote.
The notice of motion calls for a report on “disability sport that is currently performed and options to expand based on a community social need across council’s managed community assets, to support the mobility challenges and provide options such as Frame Running to experience movement and independence in a safe and supportive inclusive environment’’.
Cr Berbari said local people with disabilities who want to participate in sports such as Frame Running have to travel one hour either to Wollongong or Homebush.
“I recently went along with a friend of mine, Diana, for her son to participate in frame running in Wollongong (pictured above).
“To see these kids, they were flying, not running; they had such big smiles on their faces,’’ Cr Berbari said.
“This is why I brought this motion to council, so parents of mobility impaired children like Diana don’t have to travel so far.
“I watched her pack the car for the trip to Wollongong and it was so much she had to do before driving all the way there.
“This is a growing need, and we should respond to it by providing such facilities right here.’’
Cr Karen Hunt said Campbelltown was the ideal place for such facilities.
“We are all about inclusivity in Campbelltown,’’ Cr Hunt said.
