Impressive numbers: Mayor George Brticevic with some of the volunteers recognised at today’s Gift of Time ceremony.

During his opening address at today’s Gift of Time ceremony, Campbelltown Mayor George Brticevic said that while visiting sister city Koshigaya last year he had noted there was an expectation that Japanese people who retired would put back into the community via volunteer work.

“I was introduced to a group of volunteers, who had just retired and they were expected to make a contribution,’’ he said.

“We don’t have that expectation of our fellow citizens who retire; I guess we’re a bit more relaxed, but even so today shows what a remarkable effort our local volunteers make every year,’’ he said.

Cr Brticevic said that around 2,100 volunteers representing 60 local groups had contributed more than 366,000 hours of their time to the community this year.

“These are impressive numbers which make me proud to be mayor of this city.

“That’s why we are here today to recognise the extraordinary generosity of Campbelltown’s volunteers,’’ Cr Brticevic said.

He went on to present certificates to representatives of the community groups.

“Giving out certificates for your effort is not much, in terms of how much it costs, but council wanted to show its gratitude to you all,’’ he said.
