Imagine a shopping centre without parking problems

No parking problems: inside the shopping centre in Oran Park Town.

Imagine a shopping centre where the biggest parking problem is choosing which vacant spot to use.

Those of us who often visit Macarthur Square will just say, oh yeah, where?

But it does exist, and according to some, it’s in the new geographic centre of Macarthur region.

It’s Oran Park Town Centre, and it’s on the corner of Peter Brock Drive and Oran Park Drive – a reminder of what made way for the row after row of suburbia.

Inside, this gleaming new palace of consumerism boasts tall ceilings that remind you of modern airport shopping centres.

It is very nice and clean, but there are few shoppers on the Thursday afternoon when the Voice in Macarthur pops in for an appointment with someone who has an office on the third floor, which is called the Smart Work Hub.

The tranquillity is in big contrast to the noise made by the racing cars and truck when we all knew Oran Park as a very famous raceway.

But the raceway is gone and its place taken by this large, well designed, comfortable shopping centre wit lots of carparking underneath.

But a word of caution to those who presently use it: enjoy your parking and shopping haven because who’s to say it will last.

As a matter of fact from next week hundreds of public servants – Camden Council staff – will start to move into their new administration building a lazy 200 metres or so from Oran Park Town Centre, and they will have to do their shopping somewhere, won’t they?
