This is bloody cold, boys: from left, Steve Wisbey, Paul Blyton with the hat, and Glenn Creecy realise that the ice bucket challenge is not for the faint hearted.

There are some brave souls in Macarthur country, but none more so than the three amigos who took on the ice bucket challenge last night in Camden.

When Steve Wisbey, Glenn Creecy and Paul Blyton pledged to undergo such torture to raise funds for motor neurone disease (MND) they weren’t to know that they would be doing so on the coldest night in August.

But these three good men had no hesitation when the time came last night on the balcony of Upstairs@Freds.

There was some trepidation on their faces when the buckets full of ice came out from the bar, but they nonetheless kneeled down and let it happen. [The sequence of photos below tell the story.]

Just watching the avalanche of ice crashing into their heads made the rest of us shudder – and we were merely watching the spectacle.

And incredible as it was to watch an ice bucket challenge live – much more exciting than on video – this was only one of several highlights from last night.

Last time we had a joint birthday party we weren’t even 10 years old: Steve Wisbey and Kent Lipman last night.

Sharon Degeling, an MND NSW ambassador, explained what motor neurone disease was all about in a very informative speech.

Then followed a moving personal account by Kent Lipman, the 47 year old father of triplets who was diagnosed with MND nine months ago.

Kent and Steve Wisbey, the owner of Upstairs@freds, grew up together in Bexley, often having joint birthdays as their special days were only a few days apart.

Having gone their separate ways in adulthood, the pair decided to have one more joint birthday party after they reconnected with each other.

And that was the other emotional highlight from last night as Kent and Steve blew out the candles on their birthday cake.

As fundraisers and awareness nights go this was one of the most heart warming in Macarthur for a long time – it’s just a shame the torrential rain kept some people away.
