Help a phone call away for older people.
The Regional Assessment Service (RAS) makes it easier for older people across South West Sydney to access the services they need to help them live safely in the community.

Remaining healthy and independent becomes increasingly important, but also increasingly difficult for some people as they grow older.

You may need a little extra help, or be caring for a family member who needs some help to remain living comfortably and safely at home.

South Western Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD) aged care and rehabilitation service manager Adele Lubiana wants to let you know that help is only a phone call away.

Ms Lubiana says that the Regional Assessment Service (RAS) makes it easier for older people to access the services they need to help them live safely in the community.

“These services may include transport, social support, domestic assistance, personal care, home maintenance, meals, home modification, nursing care and flexible respite services,” Ms Lubiana said.

“No referral is needed – all it takes is a simple phone call and an RAS assessor will organise a time to come to your home for a face-to-face interview.

“During the interview, they’ll ask you some questions to find out what care and support services are needed to help you or your loved one continue living at home.

“They’ll ask questions like whether you have any health concerns, how you are currently going with completing activities around the home and questions relating to your safety in the home,” she said.

Ms Lubiana said the assessor works with clients to develop a support plan that reflects their aged care needs, goals and preferences.

“Often a small amount of support is all that is needed to help older people or their carers.

“It can be as simple as someone to help take you shopping or assist with your housework, or for a hand rail to be installed at your home to increase safety.

“The assessment is free and organised at a time that suits you.

“You can have a friend, family member or carer there to help you answer questions and interpreters are also available,” she said.
