“The value of our nurses and midwives has never been clearer than it is now, as they stand in the front line in the global effort on COVID-19.”

So says Sue Hair, the South Western Sydney Local Health District acting director of nursing, midwifery and performance as the work of the “Healing Hearts’’ is recognised as part of International Day of the Midwife  (May 5) and International Nurses Day (May 12).

“Nurses and midwives are central to the delivery of health care and are making invaluable contributions to the health of people in south western Sydney and across the globe,’’ Ms Hair said.

“This week we get to show our gratitude to those amazing people who work tirelessly to provide the highest quality care to our community.”

Blue and purple hearts, representing the colours of nursing and midwifery, will be popping up in local hospitals and health services in the form of stickers, posters and postcards.

Staff and the community are encouraged to post pictures of themselves wearing the stickers on social media, using the hashtags #everyperson and #exceptionalcare.

The Healing Heart postcards provide a way to recognise and thank nurses and midwives for their unique contribution.

There are more than 50,000 nurses and midwives in NSW Health’s hospitals and services. In the 2019/20 Budget the NSW Government committed $2.8 billion to recruit a total of 8,300 frontline health staff over the next four years, including 5,000 nurses and midwives.
