The Harlequins kicked off the 2015 season and their return to the Illawarra rugby competition against Tech Waratahs at Campbelltown Showground on Saturday with two bonus wins in first and second grade, with thirds suffering a narrow defeat.
First grade:
Coach Owen Gregory was happy with a bonus point win in the first round even though the boys were a little rusty.
But they still managed to run out 31-0 after a second half romp that showed signs of good things to come in the future.
Tries went to Matt Ravlich, Adam Choice, Ananaiasa Diri, Malakai Furofuka and Fale Seiuli with Adam Choice kicking three conversions.
The Harlequins managed to defend their line so well they left the visitors scoreless.
Adam Choice was voted man of the match.
Second grade:
A pleasing result for seconds who also grabbed a bonus point 22-6 win over the Tech.
Tries to John Soloi (1), Nathan Carney (1) and Palot Seiuli (2) with Stephen Cook kicking one conversion.
Man of the match for Harlequins was awarded to Sam Maseafa.
Third grade:
The day commenced with a tight loss to the Harlequins third grade.
Tech pipped the locals by just four points, the final score 14-10 in favour of the visitors.
Centre Alick Morrell scored the only Harlequin try, which was converted by Joshua Mahina. Joshua also kicked a penalty goal to make up Harlequins 10 points.
Noa Raura was man of the match for Harlequins.
Women’s rugby:
The women’s team competed in a Sevens tournament at Blacktown. This was the first hit out for the ladies and although they did not win any of the games they competed in, they were able to score tries in all three. Coach Paul Verrell was happy to get a look at his team under playing conditions and was pleased with their commitment.
