Big night for Liverpool: Councillor Tony Hadchiti

This is a great night for Liverpool!

That’s what Councillor Tony Hadchiti said to open debate on the tender for the proposed Carnes Hill community facility at last night’s Liverpool City Council meeting.

But the mayor, Ned Mannoun, was even more effusive in his support of the project: “This is the biggest investment in sporting and community facilities in Liverpool’s history.

“This is a $42 million fund; this is not just a first for any council in western Sydney but a first for any council anywhere in Sydney,’’ Mayor Mannoun said.

Cr Hadchiti, who started the debate in favour of the project – which was unanimously supported by all 11 councillors when put to the vote – told council: “Carnes Hill will finally get a state of the art community facility.

“If approved, this is going to be a magnificent community centre and it will have it all,’’ Cr Hadchiti said.

“It will have a skate park so local kids can just walk across, there will be picnic areas, a basketball stadium as well as a library.

“Yes, a library. A few years ago we were being accused of closing down libraries but we’re opening new ones.

“And this will be a big library, which will be great for our residents on the western side.’’

Few details were provided by the council on the Carnes Hill community facility tender because it was a confidential item to protect the commercial interests of companies which had expressed interest for the work.

Former mayor, Cr Wendy Waller, asked if council had determined the running costs of Carnes Hill community facility once it was completed.

Council chief executive officer manager Carl Wulff replied that officers were in the process of determining such running costs.

“Work will start soon so we won ‘t have to wait long to start seeing things happening at Carnes Hill,” Cr Hadchiti said.
