The Green Army is marching on at Liverpool’s riverside Light Horse Park.

Mayor Ned Mannoun has launched a Green Army project that will beautify the park over the next few months.

At the same time it  will give local young people new skills in horticulture.

“The team’s work ties in with our future plans to transform the riverside through the Building Our New City project,” Mr Mannoun said at yesterday’s launch.

“This team of nine young people will learn about vegetation management including identifying and destroying noxious weeds, mulching and planting, and the care and appropriate place for native plant species.

“We’re pleased this site has been selected because we want Liverpool to become a great river city.

While the Light Horse Park team got under way, across the Georges River, the Clinches Pond Green Army project came to a close.

Mr Mayor congratulated the team on their success.

“I’m really pleased with how much work the team did at Clinches Pond and Wattle Grove Lake,’’; he said.

“They’ve got rid of some nasty weeds and created a healthier habitat for local birds and reptiles.

“I’m sure they’ve all learnt some useful new skills which will increase their ability to get a job in the industry.”

The Light Horse Park team will complete their work on November 30.

They will be supervised by MTC Australia.

Funding is provided by the Australian Government, with Liverpool Council as a project sponsor.

Council provides in-kind funding including staff time, mulch, and native plants.
