Campbelltown’s bushland areas are receiving a helpful boost thanks to the efforts of Green Army groups.

The teams of up to 10 young people have been conducting ground works at a range of sites.

The goal is to help conserve and improve critically endangered vegetation communities.

These include the Cumberland Plain Woodland and Shale Sandstone Transition Forest.

In 2015, a federally funded Green Army group worked to improve and protect biodiversity at Smiths Creek Reserve, Fisher’s Ghost Creek in Bradbury and Varroville Reserve.

Over a six month period it contributed almost 5,900 hours towards the planting and propagation of plants.

The team also conducted water surveys, weed treatment and rubbish removal.

Campbelltown Council worked in partnership with project sponsor Conservation Volunteers Australia nfor the successful project.

Council was subsequently successful in securing grant funding for two new Green Army groups.

It meant the project area could be extended to Cook Reserve, Ruse.

Noxious and environmental weed control, rubbish collection and re-vegetation are some of the work being done by this Green Army group in Cook Reserve.

The project started in April and will continue until late October.

Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr Paul Hawker, said the work of the Green Army groups was important to the ongoing conservation of our city’s unique bushland areas.

“Campbelltown City boasts a number of important ecological communities, often nestled within suburban areas.

“These provide a natural oasis for local wildlife,” Cr Hawker said.

“I congratulate the Green Army groups for their work in preserving the ecology of these public spaces for future generations to enjoy,” Cr Hawker added.

Green Army activities at key sites across the local government area will continue until February 2017, providing ongoing support to council’s own bushland regeneration activities.

For more information about the initiative, or how young people aged 17 to 24 can be involved, visit the Campbelltown Green Army website link here.
