Greek Mardi Gras coming to Camden on February 25: Carnevale festivals in Greece also celebrate the god of wine, Dionysus.

Everyone knows what a Mardi Gras is.

In some places Mardi Gras is known as Carnival or Carnevale.

The Greeks call it Apokries.

But whether you call it Mardi Gras, Apokries, Carnival or Carneval it means the same thing.

Which pretty much is: Lent is coming, we have to give up meat for 40 days, so let’s have some fun before then.

Mardi Gras combines pagan and Christian traditions, so these days it’s not just about eating as much meat as you can stuff your face before the fast begins.

In the northern hemisphere, and in countries like Greece, it is Spring time, so Apokries is three weeks of fun, of eating meat and drinking wine.

There are major parties or festivals across the country.

Now Apokries is coming to Macarthur country in a special fun night at the very classy upstairs@freds in Camden.

Steve Wisbey and Mandy Avinou, the Camden couple behind upstairs@freds, have joined forces with Macarthur Greeks Inc. to present Carnevale.

John Tsekas, the man behind Macarthur Greeks, says, “it may not be Rio de Janeiro or Mykonos but Camden will get to experience the rhythm and sounds of Latin and European vibrations on Saturday, February 25.

“Bring your masks, dress up in fancy dress and be ready for a confetti fight and a lot of fun besides.

“Traditionally during Apokries we are allowed to indulge in some festivities,’’ Tsekas said.

“Some say it is a pagan ritual – I say it’s time to have fun.’’

There will be delicious canapes and pizzas, beverages and entertainment and Mr Tsekas says he will be “sneaking in some Greek and Italian sweets’’.

There will also be a prize for the best dressed male/female.

To book your tickets for this fun event call Antonia on 0449 944 814 or Tezza on 0406 922 551.
