Good old days when ours was the best mascot in the league

best mascot in the league
Those were the days, my friends, our team got flogged but so long Mark the Magpie was there everything was alright with the world.

They were the good old days when our mascot was the best in rugby league; he made us laugh a lot, which helped when the Magpies where getting flogged.

Do you remember that crazy rugby league mascot, Mark the Magpie?

Rumour has it he transformed himself into a Wests Tiger for a couple of years before hanging up his mascot gear for good.

Well, we have tracked down the man behind the feathers and maybe the tiger’s tail. Mark Wallington has agreed to have a chat with the South West Voice for a “where are they now’’ profile.

Do you have a question you’d like us to ask Mark the Magpie? Email it to us by 10am tomorrow morning (Friday, February 5).

♦ Speaking of where are they now, some locals may be wondering what has happened to Stepping up Macarthur, the youth led exhibition for HSC major art works hosted by Macarthur Square in the previous two years. Well unfortunately Natalie Wadwell, 23, of Ingleburn, the initiator of Stepping Up Macarthur, is now a taxpayer – she has a job – and does not have the time to do the heavy lifting necessary. Natalie, who works at the Museum of Contemporary Art, is naturally disappointed that nobody else could take over the role and such a worthy initiative could possibly be lost to south west Sydney.

By the way, if you are into art, especially around the western suburbs, check out Natalie’s other new initiative, her own website, which was launched just a few weeks ago in January. It’s an interesting read, so check it out.

♦ The state member for Holsworthy, Melanie Gibbons, was poised to add her opposition to the proposed intermodal at Moorebank at the Planning and Assessment hearing on Monday. Unfortunately Ms Gibbons felt unwell and had to leave. Her submission to PAC was not wasted though, as it was provided in writing.

♦ Liverpool mayor Ned Mannoun became annoyed with a heckler in the public gallery during Wednesday night’s sensational meeting where he expelled Cr Ristevski. The mayor asked the heckler to repeat what he had said about him. What did you call me, he demanded. The heckler obliged by saying: “An idiot’’.

mintofront♦ Once upon time bank branches in Minto Mall – as it was known then – were closing quicker than you could say interest rates. But now that the shopping centre is back as Minto Marketplace, they’re slowly coming back, with the ANZ opening a branch there not too long ago.

♦ The mighty East Campbelltown Eagles will be saying oui-oui this year, with two French players in their roster. They also boast a Fijian in their 2016 ranks, so well done to the Eagles. The club says they may be on the lookout for jobs for the visiting lads so if anyone there has something to offer call Daniel on 0425 335 345.

♦ Main streets everywhere may be struggling but why is it some businesses there do well year after year? An example is the Noodle House in Queen Street near Campbelltown Mall, which has been pumping out some incredibly good Vietnamese tucker for 22 years and is still going strong. There are other examples, both in Campbelltown and Liverpool.
