Not far from the main street of Camden, a team of researchers are looking into innovative ways to convert Australian pulse crops into protein-based foods.

The researchers are members of the University of Sydney’s Centre for Carbon, Water and Food at Brownlow Hill.

What they are working on is a joint global research project with partners in Singapore.

Now they have just received funding to the tune of $993,573 from round three of the federal government’s Global Innovation Linkages program.

Brownlow Hill were is one of 10 projects to share in $8.5 million in funding.

The focus of round three of the program was support for research and development projects that help to solve real-world challenges and improve lives.

Local MP Angus Taylor welcomed the funding for the Centre for Carbon, Water and Food in Brownlow Hill, which is in his electorate of Hume.

“Projects such as this show innovation is alive and well in our region,” Mr Taylor said.

“Not only is this sort of co-operation good for helping Australian businesses and researchers to commercialise their bright ideas, but it will also create jobs and local opportunities right here in our community.”

Industry, science and technology minister Christian Porter said grants under this round of the Global Innovation Linkages program were strategically focused on six areas: advanced manufacturing; food and agribusiness, medical technologies and pharmaceuticals, mining technology and equipment; energy resources and cyber security.

“Whether it’s helping to stop the spread of Covid-19, developing new treatments for chronic diseases, or creating new food products for export markets, the Global Innovation Linkages program brings together the best and brightest minds from at home and abroad to drive innovation and find solutions to complex problems,” he said.
