Glenfield station set to become an even bigger railway interchange

Ten years ago, Glenfield was a humble suburban railway station, five stops from Campbelltown.

But a  metro link to the new Western Sydney International airport would make it Greater Sydney’s most connected place, says Campbelltown mayor George Greiss.

The metro link would give Glenfield a direct line to the airport at Badgerys Creek, adding to existing connections to the Campbelltown City Centre, Parramatta, Sydney CBD, Sydney Airport, Southern Highlands and Canberra.

Campbelltown Council yesterday welcomed the Federal Government’s commitment of $77.5 million to develop a business case in support of Stage 2 of the Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport line, linking Glenfield to the Western Sydney International (Nancy Bird Walton) Airport.

The funding allocation was included in the federal budget handed down last week.

Cr Greiss said the commitment in last week’s federal budget was an important step in delivering a key connection between Campbelltown and the airport.

“A metro connection to Glenfield would ensure our community has access to a fast, reliable and accessible service to a 24-hour international airport, the surrounding economic infrastructure and associated jobs,” he said.

Cr Greiss said he hoped to see the business case completed in time to immediately continue work from the Stage 1 northern connection.

“The timing of this business case means that work to build the line could continue onto Stage 2 following the planned completion of Stage 1 in 2026,” Cr Greiss said.

This means that Campbelltown and the Macarthur region around it will not get rail access of any kind, including a metro, for years after the airport is open for business in late 2026.

A metro will be built in time for the airport’s opening, but it will head north to link with the outer Western Sydney line from St Marys.

The federal government chose to fund this route first despite the better business case for a metro link to the Macarthur region.

“Fast bus services’’ will be provided until a metro rail link is available.
