Give a little. Change a lot.

The theme of National Volunteer Week (May 21-27) is a true reflection of the more than 1,600 Vinnies members and volunteers across the Macarthur, Illawarra, Shoalhaven and Southern Highlands.

They make a profound impact in our local communities by generously giving their time to help improve the lives of others, says Peter Quarmby, the St Vincent de Paul Society executive officer for the Wollongong Central Council.

“Volunteers are the backbone of Vinnies, and without them we could not provide the extensive services and support to those experiencing disadvantage.

“It’s impossible to put a value on the contribution that our conference members and volunteers make,’’ Mr Quarmby said.

“Their passion, commitment and generous donation of their time ensures that Vinnies is able to generate funds through our stores and direct money saved on wages to providing tangible support for local people in need,” he said.

“Volunteers are also intrinsic to the work within the community – supporting our programs and initiatives like the Vinnies Van and crisis centres to help ensure that our services can operate at a reduced cost, thereby providing assistance to as many people as possible.

There are 26 Vinnies shops across the Wollongong Central Council region, and volunteers are currently sought for a number of sites across Macarthur and the Southern Highlands, including Macquarie Fields, Minto, Picton, Tahmoor, The Oaks and Mittagong.

Volunteer shop assistants provide customer service, assist with stock merchandising and sorting new donations, process containers as part of the return and earn scheme at participating sites, and help to keep the stores tidy.

Some stores also require truck drivers and off-siders. Volunteers are ideally able to commit one or two full days per week, but anyone with a passion for helping others and in a position to give of their time is welcome to apply.
