Giant housing plan will add 22,000 residents to Glenfield

Hurlstone Agricultural High School almost closed down just before the pandemic. The historic selective school at Glenfield was saved by a robust community campaign over five years.

But looking at the map above and how it will eventually be surrounded by thousands of homes, including high rise apartments up to 22 storeys, some people may say that this is an even worse fate than closing down.

All that red in the graphic represents the gigantic residential development proposed by Landcom, who own the land.

A week ago, Landcom explained their West Glenfield plans to around 70 concerned residents of Glenfield who attended a community information workshop.

The plans mean the construction over 15 years of 5,500 dwellings made up of high rise units, townhouse, and detached homes.

Residents heard that this would provide housing for 22,000 people.

Unsurprisingly, the residents are not happy, and told Landcom representatives their concerns.

The residents in the workshop pointed out the local roads are already congested to and from Campbelltown, there is a commuter car parking deficit, and plans for Moorebank intermodal trucks along Cambridge Avenue  which will be connected to the Hume Highway.

They also pointed to Glenfield train station platforms that are already congested at peak time, so how will they cope with the arrival of 22,000 more people?

Residents also expressed concerns about the noise that will be caused by the development.

Landcom says construction of the first blocks of land for future housing will commence in 2026, pending approvals.

“West Glenfield is conveniently located next to the Glenfield train station, a major interchange providing train connections to Sydney, Campbelltown and Parramatta. West Glenfield also has easy access to the M5 Motorway and Hume Highway,’’ it says on its website.

“Future plans by NSW Government are being explored to potentially connect Glenfield Station and extend the southwest rail link to the new Western Sydney Airport and possibly the future metro rail network.’’

It says its plans include having the high rise closer to the station at Glenfield, and a town centre offering a range of services, shops, cafes, restaurants and a potential health hub.

Landcom is also spruiking parks, green spaces and open spaces spread throughout the West Glenfield precinct.

  1. Generation after generation has fought to retain the Hurlstone Farm. It’s been in the eyes of politicians since at least as far back as the late 1970s. If it isn’t one side of politics trying to steal it from the community, it’s the other. Dr McDonald saved it from his party but now they are at it again. The Government is going to destroy it, just as they have the Ingleburn Military Camp. Build infrastructure out West using the skilled labour the govt insists it is bringing when questioned why so many people are coming into the country – and stop overcrowding the infrastructure built by the builder generation for their descendants.
