Ghosts off to Blacktown and battle for wooden spoon

There’s four matches left in the season and one objective for the Camden Campbelltown Ghosts: avoid the dreaded wooden spot.

After another defeat on the weekend, this time to Sydney University, the Ghosts head to Blacktown to take on the current cellar dwellers.

Blacktown Mounties are on just one point, while the Ghosts occupy second last spot with eight points from their 11 matches.

It’s a reasonable assumption that whoever wins this clash will boost their chances of not finishing last in the Sydney premier Cricket premiership of 2020-21.

First innings wins are worth six points, so the Ghosts do have a bit of a buffer between them and their opponents.

The Ghosts will be aiming to avoid the wooden spoon in the last four rounds.

Unfortunately their recent performances do not provide confidence that they can overcome Blacktown and finish the season with pride.

On the weekend against the Students, Ghosts were invited to have first use of the pitch and before they knew what hit them they were all out for just 103.

All rounder Ben Patterson scored 25 runs and then collected four wickets for 73 runs when Sydney Uni batted, but that’s as good as it got for the Ghosts.

In a dismal performance, four of the Ghosts batsmen failed to bother the scorers in an innings that lasted just 41 overs.

In reply, the Students finished a little better than the Ghosts, reaching 188, a handy first innings lead of 85.

Luke Courtney was the other wicket taker for the visitors, finishing with 3 for 33.

The Ghosts batted a little longer in the second digs, and there were no ducks by any of the batsmen.

When the last man fell, the Ghosts had reached 143, a lead of 58 runs.

Sydney Uni polished it off in 10 overs, finishing with 1 for 60 and outright victory points.

  • At North Sydney Oval, Fairfield Liverpool Lions suffered a narrow loss to the home side, UTS North Sydney, who batted first and made 300.

Chasing 301 for victory, the Lions fell just short, finishing with 290 runs.

A century from Luke Ohrynowsky (115) and half a ton from former Ghosts batsman Jaydyn Simmons (56) was not enough for the visitors, who are in fourth spot on the ladder.

The Lions host Bankstown in round 12 this Saturday at Rosedale Oval.
