Another batting collapse ended the hopes of our cricket side, the Camden Campbelltown Ghosts, of finishing the season with a bang.
Having being bowled out for just 68 in their first innings in their home game against UNSW, who made 94 batting first, the Ghosts had an opportunity for an outright victory on day two, but it was not to be.
In the end the home side were lucky to escape with a first innings defeat, instead of a humiliating outright loss.
UNSW declared their second innings closed at 198 for the loss of five wickets, giving the Ghosts a target of 226 for an outright victory.
As it turned out, the Ghosts scraped home thanks to some stubborn defence from William Salzmann (27 not out) and Luke Courtney, who faced four balls before stumps were called.
At 8 for 80 it looked like the Ghosts were gone for all money, but to their credit they managed to hang on.
Had UNSW declared a little earlier it may have been a different story.
Six Ghosts batsmen failed to reach double figures in the second innings.
It means another year has gone and the Ghosts still haven’t won a Sydney premier cricket premiership.
The club joined the competition in 1984, so unless they can win the title in the next three years they will be in an exclusive club: a team without any silverware for 40 years.
The Ghosts will finish the season with a road trip when they travel to Hawkesbury to take on the local side, who are one spot below them on the ladder.
- Meanwhile Fairfield Liverpool Lions (224) defeated Eastern Suburbs (134) at Rosedale Oval, to secure a finals spot, with one round remaining. The Lions host Western Suburbs in a limited overs match this Saturday in the final match of the home and away season.
