Starting from tonight, four financial information services seminars will be held in Camden to help local residents plan for their future.

The seminars will cover a range of topics including preparing for retirement, investment options and superannuation.

Federal human services minister Michael Keenan said anyone wanting to find out more about their age pension, how superannuation and shares work, or how to prepare for retirement, should take advantage of the free seminars.

“These seminars are a great way for people to understand their own financial affairs and gain confidence dealing with financial matters,” Mr Keenan said.

“Last financial year, my department hosted more than 3,000 seminars across the country which were attended by more than 92,000 people.”

Federal member for Hume and energy minister Angus Taylor said the seminars were designed to help people of all ages, but bookings were essential.

“I encourage interested residents around Camden, particularly the elderly, to go along to these seminars. They’ll take place over coming weeks, hosted by the Department of Human Services.

“If you can’t make it to the seminars but need some help, you can phone 132 300 and ask to speak to a financial information services officer,” Mr Taylor said.

But if you do call, remember that financial information service officers are not financial planners or financial counsellors. They do not give or sell advice, prepare financial plans or purchase investment products.

All of the seminars will be held in the Camden Service Centre, 16-22 Murray Street, Camden.

The first seminar – Running your own Super Fund – is on tonight, Tuesday, September 4, from 6pm to 7.30pm.

Understanding Property is the second free seminar on Tuesday, September 25, again between 6pm and 7.30pm.

Understanding Shares will be held on Tuesday, October 9, 6pm to 7.30pm.

Understanding Your Pension is scheduled for Tuesday, October 30.
