Turn on the lights: The Harlequins celebrate their local derby win over Camden on the weekend.

The local derby may have finished under lights, but the Harlequins weren’t complaining after beating cross town rivals Camden 33-20 at Wire Lane on Saturday.

After a two week break the Campbelltown Harlequins travelled to Camden for the first local derby match for a number of years, having just returned to the Illawara premiership competition.

The Harlequins say they were very pleased to participate in the “Back to Camden” day, with four clashes scheduled in firsts, seconds, thirds and colts.

The much anticipated third round first grade match between the Rams and the Harlequins was played at the delayed time of 4.30pm, and that’s why it finished being played under lights.

Once again a very strong performance by the Harlequin forwards laid a platform for a confident win by the visitors.

Tries to prop Alex Sherwin, No. 8 Adam Choice, halfback Mitch Gordon and five-eighth Ian Flaxman, along with two conversions and three penalty goals to Adam Choice made up the 33 points to 20 victory for the Quins.

Adam Choice was voted the Harlequins man of the match.

Next week the Harlequins are at home to Vikings.

The second grade game went down to the wire in a very close encounter.

In the last seconds of the game the Harlequin forward pack were awarded a scrum close to the opposition line.

After taking the ball off the back of the scrum a knock on in the ensuing scrum robbed them of victory going down by one point, 13-12.

Man of the match for the Harlequins, Viliami Matu, scored one try, with another going to Rick Flaxman.

Third grade had a tough day managing only one try in their second hitout for the season.

Big forward Daniel Leaufagatele crossed for the only Harlequin try in the 22 to 5 defeat.

In the Colts clash, which kicked off the day’s action, a hard match against a strong Camden side ensued.

The Harlequins got off to an early start but had to fight all the way to the last minute, scoring on full time to take the match 29 to 26.

Morgan Simpson scored two tries with Tommy Tavae, Riggot Varu and Elija Sa scoring one apiece. Laei Matagia and Ben Vulaca had a conversion each and Elijah Sa was voted man of the match.

The Harlequins played well and managed to cross the try line twice to go down to Rockdale 31-10.

This was their first competition game.

Tries went to Mele Kavapalu and Sani Malifa.

Next week the girls are off to Waverly and will play the curtain raiser to the main game.
