Mayor Peter Sidgreaves says Camden Council will play a major role in the establishment of Camden’s firs shelter for women.

Camden Council will help establish the first women’s shelter in the local government area.

Council will join forces with the Camden-Wollondilly Domestic Violence Committee and Women’s Community Shelters who work with communities to provide emergency accommodation for homeless women.

Mayor Peter Sidgreaves said the creation of Camden’s first women’s shelter would be another step towards helping women who are victims of domestic violence related issues.

“Throughout this year council has continued to solidify its commitment to stand against domestic violence and it’s fantastic to continue supporting and building our great relationship with the Camden-Wollondilly Domestic Violence Committee in helping to establish this shelter,” Cr Sidgreaves said.

“It is planned that a shelter be provided for up to six women and their children in the Camden area.

“These shelters provide crisis accommodation and a client-centred case management plan.”

Women’s Community Shelters chief executive officer Annabelle Daniel said the organisation was eager to work with council on the initiative.

“Women’s Community Shelters is very happy to be working with partners Masterton Homes, Wattle Grove Lions, local Champion Tanya Whitehouse and the broader Camden community towards establishing a purpose-built shelter in the Camden area,” she said.

“We look forward to developing a local shelter board and welcome local community involvement and support for the shelter, as we have been fortunate to receive in other Women’s Community Shelter locations.”

In other Camden news, council has celebrated the efforts of volunteers in the community at the annual Mayor’s Volunteer Thank You reception.

The event was attended by over 200 volunteers from more than 75 community groups assisting in a variety of ways this year.

Mayor Sidgreaves said volunteers were the glue keeping the Camden community together.

[social_quote duplicate=”no” align=”default”]“Volunteers are the backbone of any community and they are no different in Camden,” Cr Sidgreaves said.[/social_quote]

“Council is fortunate to have so many volunteers dedicating countless hours to a number of events and initiatives including at our Visitor Information Centre, bush care groups and libraries to name a few.

“Our area is also lucky enough to have a large number of residents who dedicate their time to local service clubs including Rotary, Quota and Lions Clubs.

“I thank each and every volunteer for their commitment to making our community what it is today.”
