Charitable funding doesn’t grow on trees, says Fred Borg, the chairman of Fight Against Cancer Macarthur Inc.

“It comes with hard work, dedication and the commitment of your committee, our sponsors and supporters and the community,’’ he says in this year’s annual report.

Released on the eve of the popular charity’s tenth annual meeting, the chairman’s report notes that $413,000 was donated to Campbelltown and Camden hospitals this year to benefit local cancer patients.

Over the past 10 years the charity has raised more than $3 million, with this year’s $350,000 a new high.

“Every single dollar raised is being put to work helping the many cancer patients receiving treatment in our Campbelltown and Camden hospitals,’’ Mr Borg said in his chairman’s report.

He said the bus which is sponsored by the Fight Against Cancer Macarthur and donated to the Macarthur Cancer Therapy Centre to provide transport for those patients receiving treatment made 2,430 trips (1,215 patients) and travelled over 36,302 kilometres in the past 12 months – and a total of 253,000km since its purchase.

“The committee have just recently signed a new two year contract with Campbelltown Hospital to employ a full time care nurse to work in the Macarthur Cancer Therapy Centre,’’ Mr Borg said.

Up to 30 local children and their families would have needed to spend a whole day travelling to either the Prince Of Wales Hospital at Randwick or the Westmead Children Hospital if it wasn’t for the support of the committee of the Paediatric Ambulatory Care/Paediatric Outpatient Service at Campbelltown Hospital

“Our continued support of the Macarthur Cancer Therapy Centre, the Oncology Ward and the Paediatric Ambulatory Care Unit at Campbelltown Hospital and the Palliative Care Unit at Camden Hospital has allowed these hospitals to provide some of the best cancer treatments in the state,’’ Mr Borg said.

“This year with the help of our special care nurse Bobbie Elston, the Fight Against Cancer Macarthur is also sponsoring and supporting the Macarthur Bowel Cancer Support Group.

“Our work has only just begun but if we continue as a community with the passion and dedication we have shown thus far, I’m sure we can continue to provide ever better services for our friends and families with cancer.’’
