After years of neglect, education is the word in SW Sydney

The two fastest growing parts of outer South Western Sydney are Leppington and Austral. The population in these two areas has exploded in recent years.

The number of families in Austral grew from 682 to 1,799 from 2016 to 2021, and the number of families in Leppington went from 888 to 2,564 over the same period.

Unfortunately, infrastructure has not followed the population growth to Leppington and Austral.

This has included a dire shortage of schools for the thousands of young children who now call Leppington and Austral home.

But things are changing, at least on the educational front, with new schools, both primary and high, and expansion of current schools to cater for that growth.

As part of that, the state government has today revealed designs for major improvements to Austral Public School and Leppington Public School.

Information sessions were held for the communities from Leppington Public School and Austral Public School this week, with families learning about the upgrades, and viewing the concept designs.

Planned upgrades at both schools will see the construction of fit-for-purpose classrooms, new support learning classrooms, and an upgrade and refurbishment of administration facilities and library to support the area’s growing student population.

Leppington Public School will also receive a new hall, canteen and covered outdoor learning area.

“It is fantastic to see the NSW Government’s investment in education in Sydney’s South West,’’ says Member for Leppington Nathan Hagarty.

“I encourage all families to come along to one of the upcoming community information sessions to see the designs and learn how these school upgrades will affect them.

“I look forward to sharing more updates on these projects as they progress.”

Minister for education and early learning Prue Car said she was thrilled to see the designs of the planned upgrades at Austral Public School and Leppington Public School.

“Expanding and upgrading these primary schools will not only mean more children have access to high quality learning at their local school, but that more students are able the flourish in contemporary facilities.”
