An “eco gym’’ day will be one of the highlights of local 2015 Mental Health Month activities.
Campbelltown City Council is behind the first ever eco gym, which will be held this Saturday, October 10 at Scattergood Reserve, Larapinta Crescent, St Helens Park.
Its aim will be to help promote wellness via outdoor activities. It will get under way from 9am and continue for four hours until 1pm.
October is Mental Health Month and this year’s theme is “value your mind’’.
The campaign wants to encourage people to think about their mental health and make it a priority in their daily lives.
Following this theme, the Eco-Gym initiative will engage the community through Bushcare related activities, with a focus on getting back to nature to help promote a healthy mind and healthy body.
Eco-Gym will take participants outside and into Campbelltown’s pristine bushland for gentle stretching and exercise before they embark on Bushcare activities, including planting local native species and rehabilitating the bushland.
There will also be a bushwalk and the opportunity to learn more about health and well-being, as well as meeting other people who enjoy the outdoors.
Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr Paul Hawker, said council was committed to providing a range of recreational opportunities, accessible to all residents of Campbelltown.
“There are a number of studies that demonstrate outdoor activities, such as tree planting, can improve mental health,” Cr Hawker said.
“This event provides residents with the opportunity to meet like minded people and build connections within their community, which is important for general health and wellbeing.

Participants should wear enclosed shoes (such as sneakers), with long pants and long sleeves also recommended.
Healthy snacks and water will be provided.
