Help from above: The Holy Family Church under construction in Oxford Road, Ingleburn.

Earlier this year one of our exclusive reports was about a rather imposing new Catholic church under construction at Oxford Road, Ingleburn.

Driving past it this morning we could see that there was still a way to go before it would be ready for local parishioners in time for Christmas services.

Maybe the Catholic diocese will need to call on a higher power to make sure its newest place of worship is ready for such a big time of the year for Christians.

Or a miracle.

All jokes aside it’s amazing how construction sites can quickly go from, well, construction sites, to being open for business. So it would not surprise to see this church operating during the holy season.

♦ Some people wouldn’t go near Facebook with a 20 foot barge pole, but we love it. And where else but FB would you get a post like this one we spotted in the Macarthur Notice Board page today:

“To the person that left their groceries at Woolworths Tahmoor town centre car park. They have been returned to Woolworths.’’

Only a kind generous person would go to such trouble and this one obviously is with us when it comes to FB.

So well done, Donna Hickey Troy. You deserve a reward for returning the groceries to Woolies and then posting your actions on Facebook.

Before, with a blue tie...
Before, with a blue tie…

♦ Does our new mayor keep a stack of different colour ties in the mayoral limo?

He must have at least one spare because he had to use it yesterday.

The formalities were about to start at the Wanderers announcement yesterday in Campbelltown Sports Stadium when Mayor George Brticevic bolted through the dressing rooms and returned a few moments later putting a red tie around his neck.

But the Wanderers CEO, John Tsatsimas, wasn’t going to let him off the hook.

When he got to the microphone the Wanderers boss turned to Cr Brticevic and said: I’m glad you’ve gone and changed that blue tie you were wearing before, Mr Mayor.’’

For those ignorant of these matters, red is the major colour of the Wanderers club, while their biggest enemy, Sydney FC, prefer sky blue.

♦ And while still on football, John Gale from the Macarthur Football Association has won a 2016 Football NSW State Award. State Award winners are nominated by their association in recognition of their tireless efforts and service to football in their local community.

One more on football, but this time about the perils of always and only calling people by their nicknames: One of the Macarthur Football Association directors goes by the nickname of Duck.

But when a memo went around for someone to contact Matthew Spalding, nobody had a clue who that was and the response was: Matthew who? Luckily someone finally called it: You mean the Duck!

♦ At last night’s farewell function for local radio star Pat McGeown – also known as Captain Pat – there were plenty of tributes for him from the mayor and others.

But one of Captain Pat’s hallmarks is his ability to deflect praise on to others, even at his own farewell.

And he did that marvellously last night.

Everyone there particularly loved his mention of South West Sports Academy of Sport chief Gerry Knights.

“That guy puts more energy in helping local sports people than a sport person puts into their sport,’’ Captain Pat said.

Goodbye and good luck, skipper.

♦ If we were an old fashioned newspaper we’d need a separate edition just to keep up with our indefatigable State Member for Campbelltown, Greg Warren.

Luckily we’re not and space is not a problem in cyber space so we can bring you a couple of things he did in parliament last week.

One was to :42 acknowledge the 75th anniversary of Beverley Park School and the tremendous efforts this school has achieved in its rich history.

The second one was to pay tribute to Tim Pickles and the ceramic pig that’s outside his garden centre on the corner of Queen Street and Campbelltown Road/Moore Oxley Road.

Twice weekly Pig’s community billboard message is updated and uploaded to social media, spreading important information throughout Campbelltown and our region, the MP told parliament.

“His master, Tim, and Pig have endorsed movements such as White Ribbon Day, RUOK, Dry July and Beyond Blue, amongst others.

“I ask the House to join me in acknowledging Pig for bringing community awareness to the agenda and for keeping a smile on the faces of residents of Campbelltown.’’
