Olympic and world champion cyclist Kaarle McCulloch is the latest high profile local to back the United for Macarthur A-League bid, saying she is proud to accept the invitation to be the community ambassador for the local campaign.
Kaarle was born in Campbelltown and now lives in Wilton, where she dreamt of representing Australia as a promising middle distance runner.
When Kaarle’s interest in track and field began to wane, she discovered a new passion in track cycling.
Her dream of representing her country came true in 2009, when she and teammate Anna Meares won the team sprint event at the World Championships and broke a record in the process.
Kaarle and Anna successfully defended their title in 2010 and 2011, before going on to win the bronze medal at the London Olympics.
Kaarle said she was excited to be the United for Macarthur A-League bid community ambassador.
“Campbelltown has the potential to lead the way in grassroots sport through to professional sport because the number of young families moving into the area is growing rapidly, so the number of kids playing all types of sport is also going to expand.
“I was really lucky to have the opportunity to play many different sports as I was growing up, and I know what a great opportunity and inspiration it will be for kids in the Macarthur region to have their very own A-League team to support.
“Sport has a wonderful way of bringing people of all ages together, which is why I think the bid’s name United For Macarthur is so appropriate.
“Macarthur people are very parochial. We’re proud of our region, and we support each other in good times and bad.
“An A-League team will bring many benefits to the local community, including providing professional pathways for the many young footballers in the area. “But it will also inspire our young people and encourage them to follow their dreams – whether they are sporting or in other fields.
“A Macarthur A-League club will be a family club, owned by the community, which will run a whole host of community programs that will benefit our region.”
Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr George Brticevic, said Kaarle was a very welcome addition to the bid’s team.
“Kaarle is a wonderful example of the huge pool of sporting talent we have in the Macarthur region,” he said.
“She has represented our country at the highest levels of sport and is a great role model for young people not just in her home town, but everywhere.
“We’re very grateful that she has agreed to be our community ambassador for the United for Macarthur A-League bid and look forward to working with her.”
Locals are being encouraged to rally behind a Campbelltown City Council-led bid for an A-League team, United for Macarthur, to play out of Campbelltown Sports Stadium from the start of the 2019 season.
