One person died and a second one trapped in a multi vehicle crash which blocked the Hume Motorway near Mittagong this morning.

The crash happened shortly before 4.30am this morning when a car and a petrol tanker – both travelling south – collided at Colo Vale; a third vehicle was then hit.

The first car rolled several times before coming to rest in the median strip.

The driver of that vehicle has died at the scene.

All southbound lanes were blocked as a consequence.

Emergency services were working to free a passenger in the second car who was trapped; the sex, ages and injuries of those involved are unknown at this time.

Traffic on the motorway was expected to be disrupted for some time and motorists should consider using Picton Road.

• A man has been charged after a young woman was assaulted on a train between Bowral and Tahmoor railway stations yesterday.

Police say that about 5.30pm a 19-year-old woman boarded a train at Bowral Railway Station.

A short time later, a man sat next to her and indecently assaulted her.

The woman moved away but the man followed her and indecently assaulted her a second time.

Other commuters assisted the woman and a 34-year-old man was detained at Tahmoor Railway Station until police arrived.

About 5.50pm, officers from Police Transport Command (PTC) attended and arrested the man.

He was taken to Narellan Police Station and charged with two counts of assault with an act of indecency.

The man was granted strict conditional bail to appear at Picton Local Court on Tuesday, February 28.

The Police Transport Command (PTC) established Operation Artemis as an on-going campaign targeting offences relating to assaults on the public transport system, especially indecent and sexual assaults.
