A package of Covid support measures proposed by councillors Nathan Hagarty and Charishma Kaliyanda have been given the green light at Liverpool Council.

“With numbers continuing to rise, people are stressed, anxious and uncertain about the future,’’ says Cr Hagarty.

“But help is on the way. Businesses will have access to support and advice, essential workers will be looked after and there will be much needed relief for ratepayers.

“With many in Liverpool struggling, now more than ever, we need our leaders to stand and fight for the community.

“As the closest level of government to the people, council has an important role to play here.

“We’ve listened and we’re assisting the community when they need it the most,” he said.

The support measures received the unanimous support of councillors at Wednesday night’s council meeting.

Liverpool councillors Nathan Hagarty and Charishma Kaliyanda.

“This is an extensive package of support that will assist those that are doing tough,’’ Cr Kaliyanda said.

“Residents, ratepayers, sporting clubs, community groups and local businesses have all been considered.

“This is about ensuring everyone in our community can recover as quickly as possible.

“However, we know that the way out of this situation is getting people in our community vaccinated,’’

Meanwhile, Anne Stanley, the federal member for Werriwa, has backed the four-week extension to the lockdown.

“Although we were all wishing to see an end to this lockdown, with cases continuing to rise and based on the health advice, an extension is the right decision,” Ms Stanley said.

With lockdowns causing significant social and economic costs for local individuals and businesses, Ms Stanley has consistently called for more support and has  cautiously welcomed the additional support announced by the State and Federal Governments.

“Without direct government support, communities and jobs are at risk. While I welcome the announcement of an additional boost to payments, I fear this might be too little, too late.

“Clearly the pandemic isn’t over. With Covid numbers climbing and a halt on local construction, families are struggling to pay bills and put food on the table.

“I encourage everyone who needs support to apply as soon as possible via the Services Australia website.”
