Participants will get hands on experience in avoiding food waste and in preparing simple, healthy meals, when the Cook It! Macarthur cooking clinics continue next month.
The popular clinics teach participants how to avoid waste through the full life cycle of a meal, from purchasing and storage, to portion sizing and recipes for using leftovers.
NSW households generate around 800,000 tonnes of food waste each year.
This is equal to $2.5 billion worth of food, or about $1,000 in food waste per household.
In the Campbelltown local government area, close to $50 million worth of food is wasted each year.
Campbelltown and Camden Councils partnered with the NSW Government’s Love Food Hate Waste program earlier this year, to develop Cook It! Macarthur and tackle the growing issue of food waste.
Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr George Brticevic, said the free clinics were an important part of teaching the community how to reduce waste.
“The statistics showing how much food is being wasted each year are alarming, but there is something we can do about it,” he said.
“The Cook It! Macarthur clinics have been giving participants practical advice and opening their eyes about how cutting their food waste not only helps the environment but is good for the household budget.”
Cooking clinic participants will receive a Cook It! Macarthur hamper which includes a Pyrex storage container, menu planners, a recipe booklet with loads of simple recipes for using up leftovers in the fridge, and a What’s for dinner children’s book.
Bookings are essential and to secure your place call the Macarthur Centre for Sustainable Living on 4647 9828.
