The Sydney Shield premiers, East Campbelltown Eagles, haven’t wasted much time in sending out a clear signal they are serious about going back to back in 2019.

After a strong win in round one, they followed it up yesterday with a clinical performance in disposing of Asquith Magpies 44-18 at Worrell Park, Ruse.

Coach Richard Barnes summed it all up when he said after the match: “Our first 20 minutes was brutal and it laid the platform for the rest of the game; I am very proud of the guys.”

In round three, the Eagles head to Belrose this coming Sunday to take on the home side at Lionel Watts Reserve Belrose from 3pm.

Yesterday against the Magpies, the Eagles scored in the opening minute of the game when Gus Garzaniti sliced through the Asquith defence.

Super boot Sean Connors converted the try to give the home side a 6-0 lead and the momentum.

The visitors didn’t know what hit them in the next few minutes as an Eagles blitz produced four tries to race to a 28-0 lead.

Jarryd Eggleton and Guy Thompson scored one each and Shondre Lee-Silva a double, while Connor landed three from four.

The Eagles took the foot off the accelerator for a few minutes and that gave Asquith the chance to rally just before the half time break.

The visitors scored to go to the break down 28-6, but they were never really in the game

Tries to Sean Connor and Gus Garzaniti put paid to any hopes of a comeback for the visitors as the Eagles stretched their lead to 38-6.

Asquith bagged a couple of consolation tries to make the score a bit more respectable at 38-18, but the premiers had the final word.

Sean Connor scored his second try for the day to finish the game with 20 points for the day.

Best for the Eagles were Guy Thompson, Vince Ripepi and Brett Lahey, while young Gus Garzaniti claimed the players’ player honours and Sean Connor received the man of the match award.
