Citizenship ceremonies return – online

As a result of the Covid-19 lockdown, more than 700 Campbelltown residents have joined a growing list of people waiting to get their Australian citizenship over the past few months.

To help get through the backlog, from this week Australian citizenship ceremonies will be held in a new, online format.

The ceremonies are being held online because restrictions on indoor gatherings remain in place for the time being.

Several individual sessions will be held during each ceremony.

Today 19 people, including four families, will get their Australian citizenship during the first ceremony held by the mayor of Campbelltown.

“As the child of first generation Australians, I have always been proud of our strong multicultural ethos in Campbelltown and how welcoming we are as a community to new residents,” says Cr George Brticevic, pictured above.

“I look forward to welcoming people back to our citizenship ceremonies in person over the coming months.

“But for now it will be really special to conduct one-on-one ceremonies with people and families online,” Cr Brticevic said.

The ceremonies are being held for people already on the waiting list.

Priority will be given to those who have been waiting the longest.
