Light Horse Park: venue for special community Christmas lunch

Liverpool Council will join forces with Liverpool Community Kitchen and Hub and Inspire Community Services to host a special Christmas lunch on Friday, December 19 at Light Horse Park.

The inspiration to hold a Christmas lunch for the disadvantaged members of our community came from the recent visit to Liverpool by the Governor-General, Sir Peter Cosgrove, as part of anti-poverty week.

“The Governor-General’s visit highlighted the demand in our community for services for those in need,’’ says Liverpool mayor Ned Mannoun.

“We were inspired by this to host a dedicated Christmas lunch to cater for people in our community who may be less fortunate, to make sure they too have a warm and welcoming Christmas celebration,’’ he said.

“This event will support people who sometimes feel isolated or alone. It will also encourage social inclusion and engagement in a friendly environment,’’ Cr Mannoun said.

The mayor said he and the councillors were looking forward to sharing a festive lunch alongside the community in Light Horse Park on the serene river banks of the Georges River.

“Whilst we have big plans to redevelop Liverpool and help this city achieve its real potential, we must not lose sight of those who might not be in a position, for whatever circumstances, to take full advantage of our growing prosperity,” he said.

Council provides many services and support to those in need in our community, in partnership with a range of institutions including but not limited to Inspire Community Services, Salvation Army, CatholicCare, Liverpool Youth Accommodation Assistance Company and St Vincent De Paul.

One of the other local services is the Food for Life Market at Warwick Farm where volunteers provide fresh fruit and vegetables for more than 600 active members within the community.

The demand for their services operated in conjunction with Food Bank and the Salvation Army continues to increase and as a result $5,000 has been allocated by Liverpool Council to assist th this vital program.
